Toshiba brings in DT02-V surveillance HDD lineup with high areal density and improves reliability

Toshiba America Electronic Components (Toshiba) announces the DT02-V Series of surveillance HDDs, its product lineup created for digital video recorder (DVR) and network video recorder (NVR) platforms.

The series utilizes latest magnetic recording technologies to achieve high areal density, helping to improve reliability compared to the prior MD04ABA-V Series. With up to 6TB capacity, the new DT02-V Series supports a maximum of 32 high-resolution camera streams and is ideal for use in surveillance DVR and NVR platforms with as many as eight drive bays.

The DT02-V Series is designed for robust 24/7 operation at HDD temperatures as high as 40ᵒC for 600,000 load/unload cycles, at rated workload of 180TB a year. Other features include a SATA 6Gbit/s interface with a 128MiB cache to help minimizing frame drops, and a robust mechanical platform designed to achieve a 1 million-hour MTTF.

“Our latest surveillance HDD family, the DT02-V Series, delivers up to 6TB of storage capacity, and is designed for use with leading surveillance DVR and NVR platforms,” says Shuji Takaoka, general manager of storage products sales and marketing division at Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage. “It also provides a variety of capacity options while improving reliability for high resolution surveillance video streams.”

The DT02-V Series 4TB samples are currently available, 6TB samples will be planned from January, and a 2TB sample is expected to be available in March.

F5 Networks, Rakuten Mobile come together to support cloud-native mobile network, prepare for 5G-ready service rollout

F5 Networks announced that it has partnered with Rakuten Mobile, the mobile network subsidiary of Rakuten Group, to support the company’s October launch of the initial fully virtualized, cloud-native mobile network and its future deployment of 5G. The carrier will leverage F5’s network functions virtualization (NFV) capabilities to optimize its new mobile network and accelerate its path to 5G services in 2020.

Through this partnership, Rakuten Mobile, Inc. is collaborating with F5 to scale and evolve their cloud-native network design architecture to increase scalability and flexibility without sacrificing control. 

F5 has provided a full-suite N6/SGi-LAN solution consisting of virtualized CGNAT, SGi Firewall, DNS Transparent Cache, and IP Traffic Optimization Functions to deliver enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services. 

F5’s NFV capabilities and offerings enabled Rakuten Mobile to simplify and optimize service orchestration; ensure application availability, performance, and security; deliver improved freedom and agility in deployment of services; and enable a higher throughput, low-latency network and allow predictable scaling for services.

Earlier this year, F5 announced several new solutions and enhancements designed to allow service providers to launch 5G services. These offerings enable service providers to maximize the investments in their current 4G networks, while optimizing their infrastructures with the scale to securely deploy emerging 5G.

Rakuten has also been making headlines in Japan with its forays into 5G innovation, in partnership with firms such as Nokia, Altiostar, Cisco, Mavenir, Intel, Qualcomm, Quanta and NEC. The fact that Rakuten, unlike existing telecommunication companies, has no outdated and legacy infrastructure to maintain is a significant advantage. 

Western Digital updates its data storage offerings for NAS environments

Western Digital introduced Thursday an array of purpose-built storage solutions for small businesses and home offices leveraging NAS environments. The solutions include the initial WD Red SSDs, which enhance performance and caching abilities in a hybrid NAS environment, as well as a 14TB capacity for the WD Red and WD Red Pro HDDs.

With the increase in virtualization, 10GbE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) and higher connectivity speeds are becoming an essential feature set in modern NAS systems. To help minimize a performance bottleneck, SSD speeds are crucial.

To fully support the requirements of these environments, storage device durability, speed and capacity remain heavily in demand.
