Kaspersky Web Traffic Security now available in two deployment options to meet customer demands

Kaspersky released next version of Kaspersky Web Traffic Security, which now offers enhanced protection capabilities though integration with Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack to improve early detection of sophisticated web threats. The product is now available in two deployment options, as a standalone application and a software appliance, to meet broader customer needs.


According to Kaspersky researchers, 717 million web attacks were revealed in the second quarter of this year. The attacks contain various kinds of malware including generic adware to ransomware and advanced threats that reach corporate networks through phishing, social engineering or unreliable web resource surfing.

Web gateway protection allows companies to block massive amounts of web threats before they reach endpoints. This decreases the number of alerts on endpoints that interrupt users and administrators, as well as ensures protection of devices which don’t have endpoint security product installed or updated.


To make the deployment and use of the product effective for companies with different needs, Kaspersky now offers two options: as a software appliance or a standalone application.

The software appliance is a ready-to-use solution for companies that need to quickly deploy and start using secure web gateway with a proxy server pre-configured. The appliance interface allows users to manage the incorporated proxy server, avoiding configuration hassle.

The Kaspersky Web Traffic Security standalone application allows resource economy and a more agile configuration for companies that need a more customized solution and careful integration of different cybersecurity products. The application does not necessarily demand a separate server, as the system requirements necessary to protect a particular bandwidth are met. It can be installed alongside other applications but configured separately from other gateway components.


The protection capabilities of Kaspersky Web Traffic Security are now empowered by two-way API-based integration with Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack, which allows customers of both solutions to achieve earlier attack detection and automated responses to advanced web threats. 

Suspicious files are automatically sent to Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack for analysis. The system reveals the nature and malicious activity that the advanced threat generates, including files, transmission of commands, payloads and stolen data, and blocks them at the early attack stage.


“Different deployment scenarios allow companies to choose the best way to secure corporate web traffic, depending on available resources or IT network architecture,” said Sergey Martsynkyan, head of B2B product marketing at Kaspersky. “It also brings new usage scenarios to our partners. For example, the new format of the all-in-one appliance can be used by managed service providers to add web traffic security to their portfolio. Thanks to the application’s ease of deployment, scalability and multi-tenancy, they can provide web traffic security as a service for additional protection to ever growing number of customers, without the hassle.”

Kaspersky Web Traffic Security is available in both deployment options as part of Kaspersky Security for Internet Gateway and Kaspersky Total Security for Business.

Kaspersky sees a sky-rise of droppers with phishing and malware attacks surface amid premiere of famous space saga

According to research from Kaspersky, the latest and final film of the trilogy has drawn the attention of attackers even before the premiere, with fraudulent websites and malicious files of the yet-to-be-released film flooding the web. Popular films are often used by cybercriminals as bait to distribute malware, and the latest movie saga from ‘a galaxy far, far away’ is no exception. 

Films are one of the main forms of entertainment users seek to access for free, which creates fertile soil for cyberattacks. Online streaming, torrents and other methods of digital distribution often infringe upon content copyright, and yet they remain popular as a source of free content. 


Torrent-trackers and illegal streaming platforms pose a threat to users’ cyber-safety, since they can host malicious files, masked behind the name of movie files. Given this tendency, Kaspersky studied how the sci-fi franchise’s name is being abused by cybercriminals in order to fool fans.

Public attention on “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which premieres Dec. 19, is already attracting cybercriminals. Kaspersky researchers found over 30 fraudulent websites and social media profiles disguised as official movie accounts (the actual number of these sites may be much higher) that supposedly distribute free copies of the latest film in the franchise. These websites collect unwary users’ credit card data, under the pretense of necessary registration on the portal.


The domains of websites used for gathering personal data and spreading malicious files usually copy the official name of the film and provide thorough descriptions and supporting content, thereby fooling users into believing that the website is, in some way, connected to the official film. 

Such practice is called “black SEO,” which enables criminals to promote phishing websites high up in search engine results (such results often show up for search terms such as ‘name-of-the-film watch free’).

To further support the promotion of fraudulent websites, cybercriminals also set up Twitter and other social media accounts, where they distribute links to the content. Coupled with malicious files shared on torrents, this brings the criminals results. So far, 83 users have already been affected by 65 malicious files disguised as copies of the upcoming movie.

Phishing is not the only way cybercriminals tend to utilize popular film franchises. Just as with TV shows, they often disguise malicious programs as yet another episode of the story. In 2019, Kaspersky detected 285,103 attempts to infect 37,772 users seeking to watch movies of the renowned space-opera series, a 10 percent rise compared to last year. The number of unique files used to target the users amounted to 11,499, a 30 percent drop from last year.

“It is typical for fraudsters and cybercriminals to try to capitalize on popular topics, and ‘Star Wars’ is a good example of such a theme this month,” said Tatiana Sidorina, security researcher at Kaspersky. “As attackers manage to push malicious websites and content up in the search results, fans need to remain cautious at all times. We advise users to not fall for such scams and instead enjoy the end of the saga on the big screen.”


Users have been advised to take the following steps by paying attention to the official movie release dates in theaters, on streaming services, TV, DVD, or other sources; avoid clicking on suspicious links, such as those promising an early view of a new film; and paying special attention to the downloaded file extension. The file should have an .avi, .mkv or .mp4 extension, among other video formats, and not the suspicious .exe extension.

Consumers must check the website’s authenticity, and avoid visiting websites to watch a movie until they are sure that they are legitimate and start with ‘https.’ Confirm that the website is genuine by double-checking the format of the URL or the spelling of the company name, reading reviews about it and checking the domains’ registration data before starting downloads. It also uses reliable security solution, such as Kaspersky Security Cloud, for comprehensive protection from a range of threats.

Emotet security attack causes shutdown of Frankfurt’s IT network

The city of Frankfurt, Germany, became the latest victim of Emotet after an infection forced it to close its IT network. But the financial center wasn’t the only area that was targeted by Emotet, as there were also incidents that occurred in Gießen and Bad Homburg, a town and a city north of Frankfurt, respectively, as well as in Freiburg, a city in southwest Germany.

The infection started after an employee of the Fechenheim (a district in Frankfurt) civil registry clicked on an Emotet-laden attachment from a malicious spam email, apparently sent by a city authority. Alarms were raised by the security system, prompting officials to restrict city services and take the IT system off the network as a precautionary measure.  


Germany has been a frequent target over the past few weeks by threat actors employing Emotet, and in general has been a target for malicious activity this year, according to data from the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network infrastructure. In fact, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) issued a press release warning the public about malicious spam emails that carry Emotet.

First detected in 2014, Emotet has become one of the most notorious malware families of the past few years. Its original iteration was as an information-stealing banking malware — however, it has since undergone multiple evolutions, including acting as a loader for other malware families. It went into hiatus earlier in the year but came back after a few months with a vengeance. This recent spate of attacks on Germany is likely a continuation of Emotet’s comeback campaigns.

Despite all the changes Emotet has undergone, spam mail remains the malware’s most prominent distribution method. The key strategy organizations can implement is to educate their employees regarding email threats and to encourage them to follow the recommended security best practices when accessing their emails. This includes always double-checking an email for any red flags, as well as refraining from clicking any links or downloading any attachments haphazardly.

Combating threats like Emotet calls for a multilayered and proactive approach to security that involves protecting all fronts — gateway, endpoints, networks, and servers. Trend Micro warns Android users on malicious Christmas-themed shopping, game and chat apps that lure users with deals

Security researchers from Trend Micro have cautioned Android users when downloading apps for shopping, games, and Santa video chats as they found hundreds of malicious apps likely leveraging the season to defraud unwitting victims. 

A scan of thousands of apps revealed seven with malicious routines such as replacing the legitimate apps with a version downloaded from a command and control (C&C) server. They also found 35 apps containing adware with more invasive behaviors than standard in-app advertisements, and 165 apps enabling “excessive or dangerous combinations of permissions,” such as camera, microphone, contacts and text messages. 


Researchers from Barracuda Networks recommend that users examine the apps they download to their phones, especially as online shopping and banking are expected to reach new heights this year.

Invasive adware were reportedly related to DIY gift projects and used suspicious ad networks by displaying catchy deals and coupons. Cybercriminals can go after banking, email, and access credentials by replacing legitimate website forms, or by using malware or injected skimmers

The researchers noted the excessive permissions that users may grant apps can be used to steal stored information from the devices such as contacts for phishing and spam campaigns, as well as banking authentication tokens via SMS messages when shoppers finalize their purchases online.

When downloading apps and shopping online, users must check app reviews on reputable websites; review access permissions being requested by the app and evaluate if they are necessary for the functions of the app; directly type the retailers’ websites, and avoid clicking on URLs found in emails and text messages, especially from unknown senders; limit the amount of personal information provided to websites and apps; and regularly update devices’ operating systems and apps.

FBI frames charges against two Russians engaged in cybercrime scheme that infected computers in a malware conspiracy

The U.S. Department of Justice has joined with the U.S. Department of State and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency in charging two Russian nationals with a vast and long-running cybercrime spree that stole from thousands of individuals and organizations in the United States and abroad. 

Along with several co-conspirators, Maksim V. Yakubets and Igor Turashev are charged with an effort that infected tens of thousands of computers with a malicious code called Bugat. Once installed, the computer code, also known as Dridex or Cridex, allowed the criminals to steal banking credentials and funnel money directly out of victims’ accounts. 


Turashev and Yakubets were both indicted in the Western District of Pennsylvania on conspiracy to commit fraud, wire fraud, and bank fraud, among other charges. Yakubets was also tied to charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud issued in the District of Nebraska after investigators were able to connect him to the indicted moniker “aqua” from that case, which involved another malware variant known as Zeus.

The long-running scheme involved a number of different code variants, and later version also installed ransomware on victim computers. The criminals then demanded payment in cryptocurrency for returning vital data or restoring access to critical systems. 

Assisted in some cases by money mules who funneled the stolen funds through U.S. bank accounts before shipping the money overseas, the group stole or extorted tens of millions of dollars from victims. Among those affected was a Pennsylvania school district that saw $999,000 wired out of its accounts and an oil company that lost more than $2 million.

The FBI, in partnership with the State Department’s Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program, also announced a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest of Yakubets, who is alleged to be the leader of the scheme. The reward is the largest ever offered for a cyber criminal.

“The actions highlighted today, which represent a continuing trend of cyber-criminal activity emanating from Russian actors, were particularly damaging as they targeted U.S. entities across all sectors and walks of life,” said FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich. “The FBI, with the assistance of private industry and our international and U.S. government partners, is sending a strong message that we will work together to investigate and hold all criminals accountable.”


According to the charges, the co-conspirators distributed the malware through email phishing campaigns. In the early years, these messages were sent in massive, widespread campaigns. More recent attacks have been more strategic—specifically targeting businesses and organizations that have valuable computer systems and access to significant financial resources.

Victims were tricked into opening a document or clicking on a graphic or link that appeared to be from a legitimate source. The link or attachment downloaded the malicious code onto the user’s machine, where it could also spread to any networked computers.

According to FBI Supervisory Special Agent Steven Lampo, this campaign deployed a stealth type of malware designed to avoid detection by antivirus software. “The full program does too much and is too big to avoid detection,” Lampo said. The smaller piece of code, however, can inject itself into the running processes of the machine—beginning a process that allows the full suite of malware to load onto the machine or network. The malware’s creators were constantly creating new variants of the code to avoid antivirus tools.

“Although their realm is a digital one, this is one of the world’s largest organized crime groups,” said FBI Supervisory Special Agent Adam Lawson of the Major Cyber Crimes Unit. “They are personally getting rich, and new organizations and individuals are being victimized every day.”
