Gartner finds that 22 percent of CFOs are personally effective; most are overinvested in finance tasks

Gartner research shows that a mere 22 percent of CFOs achieve a high degree of personal effectiveness, while using a limited set of activities and successful relationships outside the finance department are the biggest contributors to a CFO’s personal effectiveness.

The research was based on more than 100 CFO interviews and it assessed CFO personal performance and effectiveness across 231 attributes to reveal what the most effective CFOs do differently with their time, relationships and teams.

“CFOs tell us they have more demands than ever, but the surprise in this research is just how few activities differentiate the most successful operators from the rest of the pack,” said Peter Nagy, research vice president in the Gartner Finance practice. “The most important relationships that drive high performance in the CFO role are found in the boardroom and where the customers are, not in the finance department.”

Gartner determined CFO personal effectiveness based on how closely a CFO’s organization aligned to efficient growth behaviors, such as positive risk taking to drive long-term growth, as well as the CFO’s ability to meet CEO expectations around revenue growth, margin expansion, return on invested capital and balance sheet health.

As part of the analysis, Gartner studied the average weekly activities of CFOs and found that the average CFO lost one full day of work per week to ineffective activities. The largest misallocation was in how much time CFOs spent working within their own departments.


“CFOs want to reinvent their departments, keep their talent pipelines full and provide services more efficiently to internal business partners, so it’s not surprising that most respondents noted that managing these activities were a huge demand on their time,” said Nagy. “However, none of these activities, even if mastered, ultimately impacted how effective a CFO was in their overall job performance.”

Gartner found that there was no correlation between an organization’s size or industry in how effectively their CFO performed. Within the finance department, a CFO taking personal ownership of finance talent acquisition, mergers and acquisitions strategy, cost management or digital transformation also had no material impact in how effective the CFO was rated in overall job performance.

While time allocated to, and relationships created within, the finance department did not drive CFO personal effectiveness, Gartner identified three key groups of relationships which the most personally effective CFOs focused on nurturing.

The most effective CFOs succeed in constructively challenging their CEOs to achieve better decision-making outcomes. CFOs reported that they were underinvested in time allocated to both overall corporate and finance strategy, potentially negatively impacting their ability to play this role effectively.

Personally effective CFOs are customer-centric and spend more time with external customers than their peers. CFOs surveyed by Gartner reported time spent with customers was the single activity they felt most underinvested in. CFOs who exhibit strong customer relationships are also deeply connected with their sales leaders and play an active role in owning pricing strategy.

The most effective CFOs are plugged into business unit performance. Levers that can be used to achieve this are having business unit CFOs as direct reports, maintaining strong relationships with business unit general managers and a deep involvement with business unit performance metrics.

“While it may be discouraging that just one in five CFOs currently meet the Gartner standard for a high level of personal effectiveness, the good news is that just focusing on a few key relationships outside of finance can drive significant gains in this area,” said Nagy. “The key for CFOs is to be mindful about where they invest their time and with whom, and then develop strategies for protecting those time investments from their many other day-to-day demands.”

HPE Container Platform boosts application development for bare-metal and edge to cloud deployments

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced on Monday its HPE Container Platform, an enterprise-grade Kubernetes-based container platform designed for both cloud-native applications and monolithic applications with persistent storage. With the HPE Container Platform, enterprise customers can accelerate application development for new and existing apps – running on bare-metal or virtualized infrastructure, on any public cloud, and at the edge.


The HPE Container Platform is built on proven innovations from HPE’s acquisitions of BlueData and MapR, together with 100 percent open source Kubernetes. This next-generation solution dramatically reduces cost and complexity by running containers on bare-metal – while providing the flexibility to deploy on virtual machines and cloud instances. 


Customers benefit from greater efficiency, higher utilization, and improved performance by “collapsing the stack” and eliminating the need for virtualization.


The platform addresses the requirements for large-scale enterprise Kubernetes deployments across a wide range of use cases, from machine learning and edge analytics to CI/CD pipelines and application modernization. 


IT teams can manage multiple Kubernetes clusters with multi-tenant container isolation and pre-integrated persistent storage. Developers have secure on-demand access to their environments so they can develop apps and release code faster, with the portability of containers to build once and deploy anywhere.

New GridGain for z/OS release expands in-memory computing offering to mainframe; accelerates digital transformation for enterprise clients

GridGain Systems announced GridGain for z/OS, an optimized version of the GridGain in-memory computing platform for use on the IBM z/OS operating system. GridGain for z/OS enables businesses to create solutions for efficient digital transformation of core systems as well as running analytics across their entire data estate to power real-time business processes.

GridGain for z/OS is a mainframe-optimized version of GridGain for use on the IBM z/OS operating system. GridGain for z/OS runs on IBM zIIPs (z Integrated Information Processor), the IBM processor optimized for running services such as Java on the IBM Z mainframe platform. 


GridGain is currently running trials of GridGain for z/OS with major banks and insurance companies that use IBM mainframes as the central computing platform for their core business processes. 

The IBM Z platform is used by 44 of the top 50 global banks, 4 of the top 5 airlines, and two-thirds of the Fortune 100. Across the world, IBM Z powers the most critical business systems for top enterprises, with 4.1 million core business transactions per second run on IBM Z.

IBM and GridGain will jointly present the talk “Driving efficient mainframe digital transformation leveraging GridGain/Ignite on z/OS” at the In-Memory Computing Summit North America conference on November 13-14 at the Hyatt San Francisco Airport in Silicon Valley. Mythili Venkatakrishnan, Distinguished Engineer at IBM, and Denis Magda, VP of Product Management, and Glenn Wiebe, Solution Architect, at GridGain Systems will explore how GridGain/Ignite on z/OS provides differentiated value for enterprise clients in such use cases as a coherent Financial Operational Data Store and optimized, federated real-time analytics.

The GridGain In-Memory Computing Platform provides in-memory speed and massive scalability for data-intensive applications. It requires no rip-and-replace of existing databases and can be deployed on-premises, on a public or private cloud, or on a hybrid environment. Built on a memory-centric architecture that can leverage ongoing advancements in memory and storage technologies, the solution allows companies to future-proof their applications. 


GridGain is based on the open source Apache Ignite project and offers up to a 1,000x improvement in performance versus applications built on disk-based databases. Veeam release backup offerings for Microsoft Cloud platforms; adds data protection, scalability, enhanced control of cloud-based data

Veeam Software announced on Monday public beta release of the latest Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365v4 at Microsoft Ignite 2019. Additionally, the company will be offering Microsoft Ignite attendees a sneak peek of a NEW cloud-native data protection solution for Microsoft Azure workloads, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure

Version 4 also includes added security with at-rest encryption for data in object storage and faster backup performance. These solutions support the company’s cloud strategy and provide Microsoft users with additional data protection, scalability, and enhanced control of their cloud-based data. 


With Office 365, Microsoft is responsible for the uptime of the Office 365 infrastructure, but backup and management of the data is the customer’s responsibility.

Fedora 31 generally available; begin push towards innovations around emerging IT use cases like IoT and Linux containers

The Fedora Project, a Red Hat Inc. sponsored and community-driven open source collaboration, announced general availability of Fedora 31, the latest version of the fully open source Fedora operating system. Fedora 31 includes new features that help to address a host of modern computing challenges, from building and running cloud native applications to driving innovation in the connected world.

Each Fedora edition is designed to address specific use cases for modern developers and IT teams with Fedora Workstation and Fedora Server providing open operating systems built to meet the needs of forward-looking developers and server projects. 


Fedora 31 also sees the continued evolution of emerging Fedora editions, including Fedora CoreOS, Fedora IoT and Fedora Silverblue. Fedora 31 brings enhancements to all editions with updates to the common underlying packages, from bug fixes and performance tweaks to new versions. 

This release now includes updated compilers and languages, including NodeJS 12, Perl 5.30 and Golang 1.13. Additionally the "python" command will now refer to Python 3. It also provides support for Cgroupsv2, bringing kernel level support for the latest features and functionality around cgroups in the base packages of Fedora 31. This helps lay the foundation for improved performance and new capabilities in building and running containerized applications.


The new version offers switching RPM compression to ztsd, which decreases the amount of compression time needed and improves the overall performance of processes using binary RPMs; and comes with support for RPM 4.15, the latest version of the RPM Package Manager for enhanced performance and stability across all versions of Fedora.


Fedora 31 also includes key updates to Fedora’s desktop-focused edition, Fedora 31 Workstation. Fedora 31 Workstation provides new tools and features for general users as well as developers with the inclusion of GNOME 3.34. 

GNOME 3.34 brings significant performance enhancements which will be especially noticeable on lower-powered hardware. Fedora 31 Workstation also expands the default uses of Wayland, including allowing Firefox to run natively on Wayland under GNOME instead of the XWayland backend as with prior releases.


Additionally, Fedora CoreOS, Fedora IoT and Fedora Silverblue continue to evolve and be updated to better meet the requirements of modern IT, which is powered by Linux containers, Kubernetes and cloud computing. The emerging Fedora editions remain available in preview.
